heptachord

An early form of Greek scale which consisted of two conjunct tetrachords without the disjunctive tone to complete the octave.

The heptachord probably consisted of two enharmonic tetrachords and spanned the 16/9, though in principle the tetrachords could be of any genus or mixture of genera.

[from John Chalmers, Divisions of the Tetrachord]
