pentachromatic

An experimental chromatic genus derived by dividing a whole tone pyknon into 5 parts with the melodic proportions 1:1, 1:2,1:3 or 1:4.

An example is the division of 9/8 by katapynosis by the multiplier 5 to give the series 45 44 43 42 41 40 which after recombination and/or rearrangement yields 45/43 x 43/40 and 15/14 x 21/20. The C.I. of these tetrachords is 32/27.

[from John Chalmers, Divisions of the Tetrachord]
