Chromatic refers to three different but related musical concepts:
An adjective used by ancient Greek theorists to differentiate the genus featuring semitones from that featuring tones (the diatonic).
During the medieval period the term was applied to scales which featured successions of semitones, and later came to designate the entire 12-edo scale.
